Catastrophe

KMS / CATRAM CORPORATE OFFICE SUSTAINED THE EYEWALL OF HURRICANE CHARLEY ON 8/13/04. Emergency services rendered HQ habitable. The homes of the corporate staff were severely damaged. Some had to stay in motels and with relatives due to the devastation. There was no electric or water. Despite personal hardships the KMS / CATRAM staff persevered. Out of the ruins, they rose up. Artificial generation was secured and the lights came back on in the corporate office. Although data and phone lines were down remote administration centers were set up and claims assignments were received and processed within 24 hours of a landfall from Category 4 Charley. Within the next 6 weeks, CATRAM would respond to an additional three hurricanes in the State of Florida. Congratulations are in order for the KMS / CATRAM staff for a remarkable job under the worst of conditions. The thousands of insured’s that you were able to help also thank you. It is important that you, as a client, know the true capability of your chosen Independent firm. The 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons reminded us all, once again, of the importance of this statement. There is a simple equation to determine catastrophe capability:

Total Perceived Capacity – Current commitments = Capability

KMS / CATRAM does not over-commit or over-market its capabilities. We feel that in order to maintain a stable catastrophe operation, the unrealistic demands of unanticipated volume upon an unprepared staff is the greatest danger to quality and organization. We are prepared to discuss our perceived capacity (based on 15 years of experience and data) and our current commitments for the upcoming storm season. Do you discuss capacity with your current CAT provider? There are benefits to being organized and “under control” in the aftermath of a disaster. CATRAM does not use the services of inexperienced adjusters but relies on its core of national and international professional adjusters. If the claim is handled correctly the first time, all benefit, i.e. the insured, the client and CATRAM. Properly handled files produce less complaints, reduces phone calls, re-inspections with fewer mediated, appraised and litigated files.
Additionally “right sizing” capability allows CATRAM to limit the utilization of temporary examiners and other temporary services. In a disaster, competent help is hard to find. I do not need to remind any of you of this.
